Is melatonin effective against insomnia?

[br][br]From about 55 years, the body produces less and less this hormone which serves in particular to regulate the alternation day / night.[br][br]She won her nobility against jet lag. But do we really know what melatonin is? Produced by the body when daylight decreases, this hormone regulates the internal clock of the diurnal animals that we are: it sends us a signal of rest. It promotes falling asleep and keeping in sleep by keeping a low body temperature.[br][br]These effects were first used to address the effects of jet lag. "You have to take it when you should go to bed in the country of destination, to put your internal clock back on time," says Bruno Claustrat, biologist specialized in chronobiology, a member of the French Society for Research and Medicine of the sleep (SFRMS). Repeat for two or three days after arrival in the new time zone.[br][br]Resynchronize the internal clock[br][br]If you are not at the end of the world, melatonin can also benefit you if you are part of people who are "late phase": the internal clock shifted, we fall asleep very late, which can sometimes to make daily life difficult in a world where, it is said, "the future belongs to those who get up early". "The delay in phase is particularly common among adolescents: 6 to 17% are concerned," says Professor Carmen Schroder, child psychiatrist at the Strasbourg University Hospital, coordinating a synthesis on melatonin for SFRMS. At this age, the biological clock shifts naturally (up to twenty minutes per year!), And the late use of blue-light displays does not help.[br][br]But it is mostly seniors that melatonin can relieve. Indeed, past 55 years, the natural production of the hormone in the body decreases. "This results in a phase advance: people wake up too early and deep sleep decreases," explains Claustrat. The treatment compensates for this deficiency and restores the feeling of good sleep in about 50% of cases. However, specialists caution against frequent confusion: melatonin is an internal clock resynchronizer, it is not a sleep hormone. "It is not effective for people who usually take sleeping pills for their calming effect," says Marie-Françoise Vecchierini, sleep physician at the Hotel-Dieu (Paris).[br][br]Possible side effects[br][br]On the practical side, it is important to distinguish melatonin immediate release, sold in pharmacy in the form of food supplements (products sold online are to be avoided because their safety is questionable), melatonin extended-release, a drug called Circadin. The first is effective to recover from jet lag and remedy phase delays, the second is useful to seniors by mimicking the natural secretion over ten hours. It can also be prescribed to hyperactive or autistic children and people with dementia who all have troubles of the clock.[br][br]Even if melatonin is sold as a dietary supplement when it contains less than two milligrams of active substance, beware of its possible side effects.[br][br]melatonin to pregnant and breastfeeding women, children and adolescents, people with inflammatory diseases, autoimmune diseases, epilepsy, asthma, mood, behavioral or personality disorders, and people taking medication (eg vitamin K antagonists and antidepressants). Talk to your doctor to make sure you sleep soundly.
